Long term travel feels like lucid dreaming sometimes. The grand sweeping moments and the remarkable intimate ones are so fleeting, much like the clouds in the distance. You wrap your little finger around them and it vaporises into thin air. What is tangible in a nomadic existence? The tactile keyboard beneath my fingers as I write down the brief captions to a moment? The hundred, thousand different beds that I rest my weary head upon each night? The echo of a hello that soon turns to goodbye of friends made on the road?
In the end, nature beckons the wandering soul to perch upon a weathered rock or sit on a soft tuft of grass to witness the gift of the present, to acknowledge the power and beauty of change, and to be home, wherever you are.
I’m a digital nomad, and have travelled through all continents save for Antarctica, which will come eventually. Long term exploration is about the people I meet, the ineffably diverse and beautiful landscapes, and the fascinating history, culture and languages that shape the human race. That soft-shell jacket I wrote about? I took one hiking in the Patagonian alps, when the world misted over as the rain pelted down. The mouthwatering Butter Chicken recipe description I crafted? Just cooked it at the back of my Land Cruiser last week.
Being constantly among natural and human wonders – contemplating life on top of a Tower of Silence in Iran, sitting on a carpet of soft pine needles in the forests of Chile, feeling my heart leap like the soaring bearded vultures in Lesotho – is a gift. The constant inspiration, awe and energy is an amazing force of nature that drives my work.
Life on the road is not always easy. Navigating Patagonia during the pandemic in a foreign language was an eye-opener, and so was learning to deal with the corrupt officials that lined the highways of Africa. Resourcefulness, resilience and perseverance is the name of the game. I apply the same core values to the projects I embark on, finding creative solutions to fit my client’s needs.
